Kathy Breckenridge

Background

I have been in private practice since 1997.  In addition to serving the community in family law, I organize, volunteer and lead several organizations and non-profit community programs in the Reno area.  I am a Nevada State Bar Certified Family Law Specialist and am licensed to practice law in Nevada and California.  My law practice’s primary focus is with family law matters, divorce both pre-decree and post-decree, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, paternity, adoption, child custody, child support, spousal support, elder and minor guardianships, probate and limited estate planning.  I also serve as a mediator in family law matters.

My dedication to the practice of law has been shown by the positions I have held and been appointed.  Some of the positions include, Current Board of Governors for the Nevada Justice Association, past President for Volunteer Lawyers of Washoe County and past President of Washoe Legal Services; Arbitrator/Mediator for the State Bar of Nevada Northern Nevada Fee Dispute Committee; Hearing Officer for Washoe County Social Services Appeal Cases and a Panel Member of the State Bar of Nevada Northern Nevada Disciplinary Committee.  I was an Executive Council Member for the State Bar of Nevada Family Law Section for an eight year term and past Chair of the Family Law Section.  I have also been appointed by the Court to serve as a guardian ad litem or SAFE advocate in numerous child and elder guardianship cases.  My involvement in the community is known and respected by fellow advocates and colleagues.

I obtained my undergraduate degree at the University of Nevada in May of 1991.  During my tenure at the University of Nevada, I also pursued my love for flying and obtained my pilot’s license. While continuing to work full-time, I continued my education and pursued my law degree at the University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, in Sacramento, California.

During the summer of 1995, in the midst of Law School, I interned with the Honorable Charles M. McGee, a retired District Court and Family Court Judge.  It was Judge McGee who encouraged me to pursue Family Law for which I will be forever grateful.  In 1996, I received my Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.  After passing the California State Bar and the Nevada State Bar, I became an associate attorney for Mr. Gunderson.  In 1997, after almost two decades of working for and with Mr. Gunderson, I stepped out on my own to begin building my own practice in family law.

In my many years of experience in working at all levels within a law practice, I have built a successful family law practice and, what I believe to be, an honorable reputation throughout the legal community.  I pride myself as being an zealous advocate for my clients while maintaining respectful relationships with opposing counsel and the Court.  I believe my ethics, perspective and knowledge of the law have been acknowledged by my colleagues.

I also attend several continuing legal education programs per year to keep my skills and knowledge sharp, including attending the Nevada State Bar annual Family Law Conference since 1996.  I also attended the American Bar Associates’ week long advanced Family Law litigation training in Houston, Texas.

In addition to attaining the prestigious notoriety as a State Bar of Nevada Certified Family Law Specialist, I am a member of many legal organizations and an active advocate for several community organizations.  I have participated as a Family Law Delegate for the People to People Ambassador Program and traveled to Egypt, South Africa, Vietnam and Cambodia with the program.

Most recently, I became a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), the nation's most prestigious and well-recognized organization of family law lawyers. Membership in the AAML is restricted and limited to those lawyers who have demonstrated knowledge, experience, and ability in family law matters. I am only the second attorney to pass both the State Bar of Nevada and the AAML tests regarding family law.

I also have a passion for horses and participate in several cutting horse associations.  Such involvement includes, Past President of the Western Nevada Cutting Horse Association; Vice-President of the Nevada Reined Cow and Cutting Horse Association; and a member of the National Cutting Horse Association, Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association and many other clubs throughout the Pacific Northwest.  I was highlighted in the December, 2008, issue of Nevada Lawyer “Lawyers are People, Too: Hobbies and Passions,” as a legal professional and for my “hobby.”

My commitment to exceed the high standards of my profession, as well as my avid professional involvement in the community, expresses my continued dedication to the practice of family law.
